Choosing the right Alsace white wine
What is an Alsace white wine?
This type of white comes from the Alsace region of France. This region offers a wide variety of wines and grape varieties to conquer every palate. Alsace white wines are mainly made from white grape varieties such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat and Sylvaner, although other varieties can also be used.
These wines are renowned for their aromatic character, freshness and complexity. Each Grape variety offers distinct characteristics, ranging from the white flower and exotic fruit aromas of Gewürztraminer to the mineral, lemony flavors of Riesling. Alsace white wines are often appreciated for their ability to accompany a wide variety of dishes.
Why are these wines bottled in bottles called "flutes"?
Alsatian bottles have their own style, very slender and elegant. The name came about as a result of the 1955 decree requiring all Alsace bottles to be in this format. The name "flûte" is well represented by its longitude.
What are Alsace's sweet and dry white wines?
Sweet wines are wines exceeding 45 grams per liter. They are made from grapes harvested at over-ripe or by a specific Grape variety .
The Alsace benchmark for sweet wines is Pinot Gris Grand Cru or Gewürztraminer Grand Cru. Finally, the most important thing when choosing this type of wine is to choose a late harvest.
Alsace dry wines are slightly sweet, with less than 4 grams of sugar per liter. So the level is lower than that of sweet wines. What sets Alsace dry white wine apart is its fruity, light, fresh character. It's the perfect accompaniment to any meal. Whereas sweet wine doesn't go with just anything.
What are the best Alsace wines?
Alsace is world-renowned for its excellent white wines. However, no one wine is better than another. It all depends on individual tastes and preferences.
We can advise you to help you make the best choice according to your preferences and the values of Alsace.
Riesling is our Alsace nugget, so don't take any chances, you won't be disappointed. Its flavors range from citrus to floral, with lively acidity.
Gewürztraminer is the jewel of Alsace. This Grape variety produces aromatic, full-bodied Alsace white wines with notes of rose and lychee. It is often appreciated for its richness and complexity.
As well as Pinot Gris, which is known for its richness, often sweeter with aromas of ripe fruit, pear, peach and honey.
Last but not least, the lesser-known but also very good Muscat. There are two main varieties: Muscat à petits grains and Muscat Ottonel. Both offer notes of white flowers, fruit and citrus.
In the end, whether it's a well-known Grape variety or not, there's no such thing as one particular marvel. It's up to you to find what you like best. On the other hand, if you're looking for a nugget for your guests, you can go for originality or the all-purpose card that appeals to everyone and will delight your palate.
How to pair it with an Alsace white wine?
The good news is that these wines are not complicated to match. You can choose a white wine with sauerkraut for other typical Alsatian dishes, as well as exotic ones like chicken colombo.
First of all, if you go for an Alsace Sylvaner or Pinot Blanc wine, which are fresh, fruity and light. You can pair it with shellfish or salmon tartar, which have melting flesh. Alternatively, you can pair your wine with fattier dishes such as charcuterie or meat pie.
Then, if you like Gewürztraminer, it will be harmonious with an aperitif or with Asian dishes such as caramel pork. However, if it's a late harvest, Gewürztraminer will go very well with desserts, such as spiced crumble or Alsatian apple pie.
To conclude, every Grape variety Alsace wine will accompany your meal from aperitif to dessert. The wide variety of Alsatian white wines also allows you to choose according to your personal tastes.
