Portrait / Winery Miolanne, wine and volcanoes
Published on July 18, 2017
Jean-Baptiste Deroche and Laure Cartier took over Winery Miolanne in 2012, located on a volcanic soil at the foot of the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne.
He's Jean-Baptiste Deroche, she's Laure Cartier. Holder of a BTS in viticulture-oenology in Bordeaux, a degree in law and wine management in Narbonne and finally a diploma in oenology, the young winemaker has also made his mark as a vineyard manager in several estates in the south of France. As for Laure, she is the daughter of winemaker (organic) and has a degree in eco-consulting. During a trip to Auvergne, they discovered the local wines, in particular those of Winery Miolanne, based in Neschers and then run by the couple of the same name, Odette and Gilles. One thing leading to another, Jean-Baptiste and Laure learn that Winery is looking for a buyer. After a moment of reflection, they throw themselves into the water in 2012.With this decision, they surprise their entourage. But they are certain to succeed in their wager, thanks in particular to the quality of the terroir. According to the volcanologist Pierre Lavina, the Neschers vineyard is the only one to have this type of volcanic and clay-limestone subsoil... with Vesuvius! In order to take advantage of and work this unique 17-hectare vineyard (6 hectares planted for the moment), the couple immediately decided to switch to organic conversion to encourage the development of Pinot Noir and Gamay. The environment is at the centre of their concerns. They want to respect the fauna and flora by limiting inputs as much as possible, both in the vineyard and in the winemaking process. The objective is, in the long term, to no longer use synthetic products. What a good idea ! ☺
