La coulée de Serrant - A unique and legendary vineyard
Perched on the steep slopes of the Loire Valley, majestically overlooking the river, the Coulée de Serrant vineyard is one of the oldest and most prestigious in France. It covers just seven hectares, but its reputation far exceeds its modest size. Originally planted in 1130 by Cistercian monks, the vineyard has survived the centuries while retaining its unique character and inseparable link with nature. Today, the Coulée de Serrant is an appellation in its own right, making it a truly singular vineyard in the French wine landscape.
For several decades, this historic Winery has been in the hands of the Joly family, who have made it a model of environmentally-friendly viticulture. Nicolas Joly, at the helm of Winery since the 1980s, is widely recognized as one of the world's pioneers of biodynamic viticulture. His passion for this ancestral method of cultivation has not only transformed Winery, but has also inspired a global movement towards more sustainable agricultural practices. For Nicolas Joly, biodynamic viticulture is much more than a simple method of cultivation; it's a true philosophy of life that places harmony between the vine and its environment at the heart of production.
La coulée de Serrant, a thousand-year-old history
Coulée de Serrant has spanned the centuries, cultivated without interruption for almost 900 years. Classified as an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in its own right, this unique vineyard covers just 7 hectares, planted exclusively with Chenin Blanc. The Joly family, and Nicolas Joly in particular, have preserved and enhanced this exceptional terroir by practicing biodynamic viticulture since the 1980s. Today, Virginie Joly, Nicolas' daughter, perpetuates this philosophy by placing nature at the heart of production.
How to enjoy a Coulée de Serrant wine?
La Coulée de Serrant wines are distinguished by their power and complexity. They reveal aromas of ripe fruit, spices and deep minerality, with a generous texture on the palate. Their liveliness and tannic structure make them the perfect accompaniment to refined dishes such as shellfish, fish in sauce or more elaborate poultry dishes. Thanks to their ageing capacity, they gain in complexity over the years, developing aromas of candied fruit and undergrowth.
