What to drink with the galette des rois?
The galette des rois: flaky or brioche?
Epiphany is coming soon! This Christian date is traditionally set on 6 January, corresponding to the presentation of the Magi to Jesus. This is also often a very good reason to enjoy the first galette des rois of the year! Here we explainthe best food and wine pairings for a galette des rois.
Before knowing how to accompany your galette des rois, you will surely choose between a brioche galette and a traditional or flaky galette. The frangipane cake is of course the classic of all classics, timeless and unchanging! But we also advise you to try a pear/chocolate galette, an apple galette or a frangipane/Nutella galette for those with a sweet tooth! The brioche cake, or king's cake, is made with dried fruit or candied fruit and sugar on top. It originates from the south of France and Provence in particular, which is where it is most commonly eaten.

Cider with your galette des rois
It is the traditional drink, we like to drink cider with the galette des rois. You can choose between sweet cider (sugar content above 42 g/litre), demi-sec (between 28 and 42) and brut cider (the least sweet, below 28 g/litre). The higher the sugar content, the lower the alcohol content. Less than 3% vol. for a sweet cider; between 3 and 4.5% for a semi-dry cider and around 5% for a brut cider. There are also mentions such as extra brut or extra sec in some regions of France. For example, extra brut cider from the Cotentin region (we offer some on our site!) guarantees a sugar content of less than or equal to 18 g/l (and more than 5.5° of alcohol).
To accompany a traditional galette des rois such as a frangipane, we recommend a brut cider that is more fresh. For lovers of semi-dry and sweet ciders, don't worry, the pairing works just the same. However, if your galette des rois is very sweet, a sweet cider could disgust some of you!
To accompany a brioche galette, the association with a plain cider remains a sure value. But you can also accompany it witha poiré! This drink is obtained from the fermentation of pear juice! It is similar to cider, but it is a little rounder, smoother and therefore the structure of perry will be more appropriate with something briochet! Try it without delay!

Wine with the galette des rois
Drinking wine with the galette des rois is possible! And natural wine is even better. Of course, we'll start with a dry white wine such as a Loire chenin for example, or a round chardonnay. These are natural wines that often go well with fish, but they will also go very well with your galette des rois.
Plain sparkling wines can also be a very good match for your galette des rois. We will go for wines that are not too aromatic, more mineral with fine bubbles that will reveal the aromas of your galette des rois.
