Choosing the right sparkling white wine
What is a sparkling white wine?
Sparkling white wine sparkles, as its name suggests, thanks to carbon dioxide bubbles. These bubbles give the wine its effervescent appearance. They can be produced naturally during fermentation in a closed bottle, or added artificially by carbonation. Sparkling wines can vary in style and character, from dry and fresh to sweeter and fruitier.
In general, sparkling white wine is often served for special occasions. Increasingly, however, it's being used for all kinds of occasions with friends and family.
What are sparkling wines?
Wines containing bubbles, and therefore carbon dioxide, fall into 3 distinct categories:
First, there are sparkling wines, characterized by 1 to 2 grams of carbon dioxide per liter. Next come sparkling wines, with a concentration of 2 to 4 grams of CO2 per liter. Finally, sparkling wines are distinguished by a minimum of 4.5 grams of CO2 per liter of wine.
Regarding the different names of sparkling white wine :
The world-famous Champagne is produced in the Champagne region. It is mainly made from three grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. This prestigious sparkling white wine is made using the traditional method.
Crémants, found in many of France's vineyards, are wines produced using the traditional champagne method, but from other regions. There are seven crémants in France: crémant d'Alsace, crémant de Bourgogne, crémant de Bordeaux, crémant de Die, crémant du Jura, crémant de Limoux and crémant de Loire.
How to pair it with a sparkling white wine?
In general, sparkling white wine is often reserved for special occasions such as Christmas, birthdays or other festive occasions. However, you don't have to wait for a special occasion to enjoy it to the full. Here are a few suggestions forFood pairing :
Firstly, champagne goes perfectly with seafood such as oysters and sea urchins. It also goes well with foie gras. In this case, choose a round champagne with character...
Similarly, all sparkling wines are excellent companions for cheese aumônières, quiches and hot puff pastries. These dishes are often rich, full-flavored and slightly fatty. They need to be counterbalanced by the lightness of sparkling wines, which leave a pleasant acidity and freshness on the palate.
As for crémants, they will be your perfect allies for dessert. Their harmonious marriage with red fruit desserts brings out the best of their aromas. What's more, they're also ideal with pièces montées and exotic-flavored entremets. This type of sparkling white wine brings a final touch of freshness and lightness to the end of the meal.
In short, whether to celebrate a special occasion or simply to enjoy a refined meal, sparkling white wine offers a versatility that will satisfy every palate.
