Choosing the right Chablis white wine
What is a Chablis white wine?
This wine is made from Grape variety Chardonnay grapes. It is produced in the Chablis region of Burgundy. Chablis white wine is renowned for its elegance, freshness and mineral character. It is a world-famous wine, found on many restaurant and café menus.
Chablis comes in different classifications, from regional appellations to village appellations and grand crus. Each of these appellations will bring you different gustatory pleasures that will delight everyone. This white wine is often vinified in stainless steel tanks to preserve fruit and freshness. However, this wine can also be aged in oak barrels to add woody notes and complexity.
Is Chablis a dry white?
As a rule, Burgundy wines are dry, but Chablis is particularly well known for this. These dry white wines are fresh, mineral and fine. Chablis is made from Chardonnay grapes grown on soils that are over 150 million years old. These soils enable the expression of wines with pronounced personality, character, balance and freshness.
As a result, Chablis is not a sweet wine; it has a low sugar content, which expresses its acidity and freshness, making it very pleasant for summer.
What dish to serve with a Chablis white wine?
Chablis can be enjoyed with many meals, bringing freshness and minerality to the palate.
White Chablis is perfect with white fish, such as sea bass, sole or turbot, which are fine fish fillets. Simply cook your fish in a pan with butter and lemon, and it will be the perfect companion to Chablis.
This type of wine also goes well with vegetarian dishes. For spring, with asparagus risotto, you've got the perfect match. Or in winter with roasted vegetables for a light meal.
For the rest of the meal, Chablis with cheese is a good idea. Choose soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or Rocamadour. The powerful taste of the cheese is softened by the freshness of the wine.
How many Chablis Blanc Grand Crus are there?
Chablis is produced exclusively in the Burgundy region of France. As a reminder, Chablis is not a Grape variety but an appellation. It's made from Chardonnay, a white grape. This appellation is renowned for its great wines: there are 7 Chablis grands crus.
These include Bougros, Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos, Blanchot and La moutonne.
