Choosing the right sulfite-free white wine
What is sulfite in wine?
First of all, sulfites and sulfur are powdery substances obtained from a stone. They are added to wine to stabilize it and prevent refermentation.
In this way, sulfites play a crucial role in preserving the wine's characteristics. However, there's no getting around the fact that sulfur is present in many foods, as well as in nature.
What is a sulfite-free white wine?
Wine naturally contains sulfur and sulfites. Thus, wines with no added sulfites express the fact that no sulfites are added during vine cultivation, vinification and bottling. As a result, only the sulfites naturally present in the grapes remain residual.
How do you recognize a white wine with no added sulfites?
On the back of wine bottles, you'll find the acronym SAINS, "Sans Aucun Intrant Ni Sulfites Ajoutés".
This type of acronym is linked to natural and organic wines. In terms of figures, there are three times less sulfites in organic wines and ten times less in biodynamic and natural wines.
Why choose a white wine without sulfites?
It's essential to choose a sulfite-free wine to protect your health in the first place. The sulfites present in wine are chemical preservatives that can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. They may experience hot flushes, headaches and skin rashes. Although sulfite allergies affect only a small proportion of the population, it's important to note that these compounds are present in many everyday products.
Similarly, health-conscious people will appreciate the alternatives offered by natural wines. By opting for these wines, they will reduce their exposure to chemicals and thus take care of their well-being.
What color to drink with sulfite-free wines?
Sulfite-free wines are available in red, white, rosé and orange. Color is not an obstacle to the production of these wines. It depends on the vinification method and the grapes used.
You can find Alsace Pinot Gris wines without sulfites, as well as other white wines offering a variety of aromatic profiles. With dry, sweet, fruity or rich whites, with grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Riesling.
Similarly, red wines without added sulfites are plentiful, from a variety of grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. This selection of reds offers a wide range of flavors, from tannic to spicy to crisp fruit aromas.
In short, whatever your color preference, you can always choose from a range of natural or low-sulfite wines, to find the one that satisfies your taste buds.
