What is a sulfite-free wine?
This is a wine to which no sulfite is added during the entire production process, from grape harvest to bottling. These wines are also called Wine without added sulfur. Please note: we always refer to a wine with no added sulfites because the wine contains natural sulfites. You will almost never find a wine without sulfites at all, only in smaller quantities. The sulfite present in wine is formed naturally during fermentation.
Do sulfite-free wines taste different from traditional wines?
Sulfite-free wines are generally livelier and more unstable than traditional wines. Sulfites stabilize the wine, and in their absence, the wine can be transformed more easily. They are very expressive, so it's easy to notice when comparing a traditional wine with a sulfite-free one.
Why a wine with no added sulfites?
Headaches after drinking wine may be due not only to the alcohol in the wine, but also to the sulfites it contains. Sulphites stabilize the wine, so they are often added to guarantee a wine just as the winemaker saw it when he put it on sale. But this salt from sulfurous gas can increase intracranial pressure, causing... headaches!
Not too risky, though, since sulfites in wine are ultra-controlled. Limits are imposed to ensure that they are not present in excessive quantities.
Which wines contain the most sulfites?
Red wine contains less sulfite than white wine! And yes, with their preservative and stabilizing qualities, sulfites are also used to maintain the color of white wine, which otherwise turns brown. A brown wine would discourage many from buying it!
